Forgotten Victims and a Problematic Justice System in “Confronting a Serial Killer”

Starz’s original docuseries “Confronting a Serial Killer” features Jillian Lauren, a top-selling author and advocate, as she confronts Little in an effort to identify his victims and return long-overdue justice to the nameless, forgotten victims of the past.

Through combining Lauren’s probing spirit and determination with interviews of law enforcement officers, investigators, survivors, and victims’ family members, the series sheds light on systemic issues within the criminal justice system. The series particularly points to biases against marginalised groups, in this case women of colour and those struggling with mental illnesses, addiction, and trauma.

Lauren seeks to uncover Little’s heinous crimes, exposing the injustices against his victims that were caused by inherent and long-standing biases within the justice system. Lauren delves into Little’s deepest, darkest secrets while struggling to reconcile her past struggles with addiction and abuse with her present-day mission to restore identities to the forgotten victims. She wishes to give them a name, a voice, an identity they all deserve though have yet to have…before it’s too late.

First Look: “Confronting a Serial Killer” Release Date and Trailer

The series made its world premiere at the annual South by Southwest Film Festival on March 16. Directed and produced by Emmy-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger, the series includes five episodes guaranteed of thrill, horror, distress, and plenty of outrage. Berlinger is primarily known for his focus on true crime documentaries, especially those that draw attention to social justice issues.

His works include “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills” and “Metallica: This Monster Lives” as well as Netflix’s 2019 docuseries “Conversation with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes,” and the biographical crime drama “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” starring Zac Efron.

Starz recently released its long-awaited trailer, giving audiences a sneak peek into the thrilling and heart-wrenching series. We see Lauren embark on a precarious journey, doing whatever it takes to unveil the truth. She puts herself in a place of extreme vulnerability, confronting Little and his atrocities up front while battling demons of her own inside.

Lauren literally makes a deal with the devil, forming an unprecedented and striking relationship with a serial killer, as she is willing to do whatever it takes to reach her end-goal. She’s running a race against time, and time isn’t on her side.

“Confronting a Serial Killer” will premiere on April 18, 2021 on Starz.
